Cisco doubles Catalyst Ethernet ports to 60 watts of juicy juice
Networking giant Cisco Systems has elbowed the amount of juice of its Catalyst 4500E can pump over Ethernet at 60 watts - another step towards its goal of making its switches the beating heart of the modern office.
Catalyst 4500E switch was announced in October with a bandwidth switching 848Gb/sec total - twice that of the product it replaces - and offering up to 384 Power over Ethernet (PoE) ports operating at 15 watts each.With the switch module 4500E, which has a total of 48 ports, Cisco has also supported Power over Ethernet Plus (OCEB) standard, which delivers 30 watts more than the Ethernet cable down to IP handsets and clients light, and has enough juice to fire up to 240 ports of such juicy.
Now, with the announcement Monday, Cisco is supporting what he calls Universal Power over Ethernet (UPoE), which doubles the power off the line at 60 watts. However, the new system reduces the number of devices that the chassis can support this full power to 120.
