Verizon should return customer loyalty

It felt like a cruel kind of marketing strategy to Elizabeth Edgar .

When her patience was about to snap after weeks of trouble with her family's Verizon telephone land line, an onslaught of mailings and motorcycle-riding sales reps converged on her Delmar neighborhood pitching a super-duper, new fiber-optic telephone, TV and internet service from, of course, Verizon.

"I said 'You picked a bad time to come here,'" she recalls.

"We've been getting a full-court press on FiOS sales," Edgar wrote in an email to me. "It's like being shaken down. 'Hey, you want to be able to use your phone? ...Well, you're going to have to buy FiOS phone (and TV and internet) from us, or you're out of luck!'"

Verizon categorically denies any connection between the pace of repairs to the Edgar family's traditional phone service and FiOS promotions, despite the way it felt to the Edgars.

Elizabeth and James Edgar , high school English teachers with two teenagers at home, are not interested in FiOS right now. They have Internet and cable TV service from Time Warner and a prepaid wireless TracFone for their son, and they remain fans of the old-fashioned hard-wired telephones installed throughout their home -- when they work.
